Opening May 2 – 4, 2019 in the Fresno area:
This University Theatre production at Fresno State is based on Meilhac & Halevy’s adaption of Prosper Merimee’s “Carmen”, written by Oscar Hammerstein II, music by Georges Bizet. This Fresno premiere is directed by Thomas-Whit Ellis and runs May 3 – 11, 2019 in the John Wright Theatre in the Speech Arts building on the campus of Fresno State.
The Fresno State production features an all African-American cast. It will also, for the first time, be presented with an entirely new, original concept. Director Thomas-Whit Ellis has updated the setting of the story from a 1940s parachute factory, to a 1970s fictionalized version of an historically black college.
“The major thing with this production, which hasn’t been done before, is it’s taking place on a black college campus during the early 70’s,” says Professor Ellis. “This lends itself to black college life; step shows, black nationalism, etc. We also see a schism between the black fraternity/sorority community and the non-college educated workers who render support services to those students. It’s a basic visual backdrop to the storyline.”
May 3 – 4 & 7 – 11, 2019 @ 7:30 p.m.
May 5 @ 2:00 p.m.
The Comedy of Errors
The Woodward Shakespeare Festival enters its 15th season of FREE Shakespeare in the Park with one of the Bard’s earliest comedies, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS. Laughter will ring out under the stars as Shakespeare’s hilarious tale of mistaken identity takes the outdoor stage. A young man and his servant arrive in town unaware that each of them has a separated at birth identical twin already there. This can’t end well—or maybe it can, but not before the unexpected double vision leads to furious wives, scandalized family members and general mayhem.
THE COMEDY OF ERRORS is directed by Ellicia Elliott, making her California directorial debut.
May 2-18, Thursday, Friday, Saturday evenings 8:00 PM.
(NO SHOW MAY 4 DUE TO GRIZZLYFEST)
